Editing The Chroma Key

In order to improve blue screen on a shot we used we have had to edit the settings in chroma key, these changes to the settings has helped to make the character clearer and the back ground more fitting to the rythem of the music.

The opacity editing has helped to make the background lighter as the original colour used was too bright and didnt give the effect of anger in the way we wanted.

Morgan Bullock- The Male Actor

Morgan Bullock is the male actor within our music video, we chose him as he is a very skilled singer himself which allows him to make the correct mouth movements and we know he can perform the song to a high standard, as he also has a musical/ performing background that lets us know he is confident enought to perform what we want him to.

Rough Cut Task (Group Post)

Research of Music Video 5 - Catfish & The Bottlemen: Mise En Scene (Group)

This is one of the opening shots for the song Home Sick by Catfish
and the Bottlemen. As the song starts off, a collage of images is shown to the rhythm of the beat of the bass guitar.
The location of these shots is backstage of a concert they were doing. This could be available for me to get influenced by as it’s a big hall, which we could have access to. The costume in this image is very
indie rock/rock as he is shown in a shaggy jumper and he also has long hair which represents the
genre as he looks rebellious and intimidating.
This image is in black and white which can represent the genre by looking as if its vintage or indie.
The costume shown in this image would be targeted for ages 15-25 as the hair style is common for people
within that age bracket, as well as the genre chosen, being indie rock.
This image also shows off the bands name, which is visible as it is center frame.

The mise en scene in this image has influenced our creativity by the location of the image, as its shown in a train station, which is a possible location for us to film at for our music video.
The focus on the street signs is very good as it represents the genre of indie rock being in a city and rough graffiti on the walls.

This image has influenced our creativity by the location shown within. This is a possible location for our music video as we could use a drama hall with the spot lights on the center stage.

This image would be a tough to replicate as within the studio image, a crowd is shown which would be hard to attain for our music video. Although, the location would be difficult to replicate. The costume would be more obtainable as it is a simple jeans and shirt, which would represent the genre by having a rough, dangerous look about the band members.

This location shot is very easily replicated as its a simple outside, location shot. This has influenced our creativity as the costume worn by these two band members is casual black attire that can be worn anywhere. This represents the genre as the one of the band members is shown smoking which gives of the impression he doesn't care and is rebellious. This represents the audience as most would probably smoke or know someone who does. Also the target audience of 16-21 of the target population as they'd be rebellious and more likely to smoke. This can apply to theorist, Winships as it's for 'Female Gaze'

This music video is performance based as it is filmed from one of their shows a a venue.

This has influenced our creativity and planning:

  • The use of multiple locations shots like shown in the video, as it would be more beneficial cost wise as well as more attainable for us to replicate.
  • Another, being the wide range of costumes used as within the video, multiple costumes were worn by the band members and this can be easily replicated.
  • The use of shot types and actions to represent the genre, for instance; close ups to show the roughness of the band members to appeal to the female audience as well the male audience to be envious of the band members.
  • That most of the music video is performance based.

Editing in Final Cut Pro X using markers and the Blade tool (Group Post)

This is the start of the editing stage of our music video, the first techniques that we have began to use are the Blade and the Markers these are crucial in the editing process as they allow to make it easy to find points to link between the audio and visuals. The blade tool allows us to cut various different parts of the video to allow it to fit in sync with the music.

Actor Complications

Our female actor has caused us to not make specific times for recording as she needs to find out work dates, we have taken this in our stride and made all our arrangements apart from the ones that involve her to keep us as up to date as possibile.

Conclusions Of Research: codes and conventions

Research TA 1 Focus group analysis

The Focus Group has become very helpful for confirming ideas we already have and developing new ones. The focus group helped us confirm our idea about colours and costume, as they agree that a transition between dark to light throughout the video is a good idea as it helps to form the mood of the song. But we did have one person who thought that the video should be colourful and vibrant, which we did have to take into consideration but have thought to keep with the majority.

Planning- Beat Script (Group post)

The couple having a confrontation, the Female (Katie) storms out upset, Male (Morgan) stays put and seems helpless in what he can do.

Memories of the past events between them, visions from when they were happy 'cuddles in the kitchen' this would be followed with a quick flash back to reality where they are arguing.

Good memories of with her and happy memories when they are both happy alone or with friends. This will show that they both can be happy with out each other, but its still better when there together.

Research- Costume and Make up

Our ideas for costumes is to use a changing colour within the video, throughout the song the clothes will change to adapt to the happiness or darkness of the song. The clothes will be basic, it will be a T-shirt and jeans sometimes matching in colour.

We want to use colour and  make up to signify mood of the video.

The make up is important and she can wear a brighter red lipstick to represent her anger with him. This will work well with a CU of a mobile when he's late.

The makeup will also be natural and submissive when she is happier.
The reason for a simple makeup is that we want the video to be narrative and look like a genuine relationship in a natural scene.

The image above shows the use of the application Celtx which allow me to present images and have a short description below.

Research- Locations

The locations that will be used for our music video have been shortlisted to a few, firstly we thought of a bedroom scene or scenes as we want to show the couple arguing or confronting each other. The next location will be for similar reason to the last as it will be a location that can be used for a argumentative scene, also with a kitchen the lyrics used fit with the location. The next locations of train station and a studio will be used to form a synergy with the lyrics and to set up a dark blank scene (studio).

Research- Editing using Kings of Leon, Use Somebody

This post is about the different ways in which videos are edited and how they use this to form the certain genre, in this case I will be researching the indie rock music as that is the genre our song is.

CUTS- The cuts within this video help to form smooth transitions between shots

Research- Shot Types

This list of basic shot types below shows what types of shot we are going to use and how they are going to be utilised.

Extreme Wide Shots- The extreme wide shot within the music video will be used to show a setting like the train station as there is a lot to be presented and only a extreme wide shot will allow  us to fit all the different aspects to form the correct setting.

Wide Shots- The wide shot can be used also in the train station setting as the setting will need to be defined into a smaller area like just the characters and a small part of the station.
Wide shots can also be used as they can allow us to present some one leaving the scene in a more dramatic format, as they can show emotion throughout the journey of leaving the scene.

Medium Shots- The medium shots will be used within the video to show the couple going through all the different emotions within the scenes. The medium shots also starts to let us use more close up mise-en-scene like the clothing that is being used and the colours that are presented using this certain clothes.

Extreme Close Ups/Close Ups- The close ups allows us now to really show the emotion within the actors and also allows them to show what the lyrics represent in actions. The close ups used in our video will mostly be used in the scenes inside a home like a kitchen or bedroom as the most emotive and passionate scenes will occur there.

Location Shots- Barnetby Le Wold (Group)

These location shots have been created to present what are going to be used and presented in the videom, this allows us to create ideas for the locations and how we would use them to the best of our ability to create the music video.

The shot of the train station that is going to be used allwos use to plan out where we will stadn and what mise-en-scenewe will use like signs and marking etc.

The Picture of the open road and surrounding fields photo gives the idea of symmetry and the actors to both come in to the scene at identical times.

Research- Principle Photography

With the use of research, and the task of principle photogrpahy my partner Harry and I have looked at the colours used by Arctic Monkeys. Through this we have found that red is a very popular colour with them, this is leading us to avoid the reds and have chosen to use a range of terracotta oranges and greys. The terracotta oranges and greys will be combined with the black and whites that we originally were favouring.

Our artist will be photographed within the multiple costumes that they are going to presented in, the locations within the music video also have to be photographed to show what possiblities that they have. As well as the costumes and the locations the props included within the video have to be shown and photogarphed to show there posibilites as well.

The locations that are being used in our music video needs to shown within a set design this will help to again show extra possiblities of the space that is a available.

Research of Music Video 4- Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes

The song 'Seven Nation Army' by The White Stripes is a Indie Rock song, I have chose to research this song as it is with the same music genre of 'Mardy Bum'. The music video has helped me and my group to form multiple ideas for our own music video.

The use of black and white is a visual that we want use as the darker certain areas of the video get shows a changing in emotion. The use of the black and white within this video is to show a use of shapes that come closer to the camera, the shapes as they move reveal a band member. The effect of the shapes has allowed all the members and instruments to be shown and included.

- I enjoy this video as the colour of the video is always being presented within the different shapes and positions.

Chosen Genre

With our use of the Arctic Monkey's song 'Mardy Bum' the genre is Indie Rock, the genre has been chosen for some different reasons and factors. Firstly the song we have chosen is a liked and popular song with my age group (16-21), but also is liked by a generation above me as the song was released in 2006 (27-31). The genre also allows us to created a different and individual video that will be able to express the Indie Rock feel.

Emailing Domino Records for permission of the use of Mardy Bum by Arctic Monkeys (Group Post)

We have chosen to change song and artist, as we want a song that will be easier and more fitting for our style of music. The reason it will be more fitting for us is that we prefer the style of genre and the artist is more our era, which allows us to relate to the music and connect with the target audience.

This is a screen grab of the procedure we have had to go through to try to get the permission to use the Arctic Monkeys song 'Mardy Bum', we are currently waiting for a response by Dominos Records.

Research: YouTube (Group Post)

YouTube has became one of the main institutions that is used for music, this is due to the access being so easy as any music can be found any time. YouTube is a good platform small artists as there music can become a internet sensation within hours as you correct video and promotion can make the video on the most popular pages that spread to ever YouTube user in the world. The use of YouTube is to create content for everybody to view, there is a Like/Dislike to show what the audience think of the music video and there is a comment section for the viewer option to be put across.

The song Counting Stars by OneRepuplic, this video has been viewed millions of times and overall has had a very positive review seen through the Like/Dislike counter. The video has been viewed 1,400,000,000 which is very high, and the like to dislike ratio is 4,500,000 like to 160,000 which is very good for such a highly viewed video.
The comments section for the video is also useful as it can help the audience to communicate with other audience members and provide a area where they can create conversation about the music video and create a positive or negative review of the video. The comments can also create a difference in opinion from one viewer to another and this can lead to the promoting of the video being better as people would want to decide themselves.

YouTube as a institution is a highly successful site which has hundreds of millions of viewers daily, this shows that the music industry has moved to the internet in a large way as the amount of people using the site is that large that the majority don't need to use other means of listening to music.

The group will be using Youtube to research the market for songs and music videos this research would be used to form ideas and new thoughts for our own music video.
The influence of Youtube on our decisions and planning of our music video is huge due to the reason listed above.

Research: iTunes (Group Post)

The beginning of iTunes, it was first launched on the 28th of April 2003, the idea was to be an online store available anytime, anywhere for in-demand music. The first availability of iTunes was on the Mac which then led to the user downloading the music onto other devices. iTunes signed record deals with large labels such as EMI, Warner, Sony and BMG, this was to make their music available on iTunes.

iTunes became a fashionable thing to be seen with it made music more attractive to the public, the image of an apple product showed a certain wealth and knowledge of music. iTunes made individual and small artists more level with the bigger artists as anything can be bought and seen.

Previous to iTunes people would use CD's to copy and share, with the introduction of the broadband internet it made the sharing of music better as it was easy san cheap. This led to the decline of large CD sales as it was so easy to copy music yourself and even to just download within seconds.

iTunes hasn't influenced our planning as iTunes is an application that is used by our group a lot but the actual application and the knowledge we now know about it have not influenced our opinions within any factor of the process so far.

The idea of the change of the music industry over time has influence all our planning and decision making throughout the process of the course, for example the time that song came out what period of time in the music industry is it located within. This is vital as it shows what is the audiences main way of receiving the music, and if the audience is modern do they feel that the CD industry has been completely stopped/ruined with the downloading ability.

The History of the Music Video

Elvis Presley

Branding-

The Branding Elvis is very strange as he doesn't have a distinctive font that will remind of him when seen, I view this as strange as for such a large artist he could of created his own recognisable font that he could always be remembered for.

Star Image-

The Elvis Star image is represented on the website as the star is in a action shot while preforming in front of a large audience, this creates female gaze as Elvis was seen as a sex icon. It also creates male gaze as many males saw Elvis as the ultimate man and all wanted to be like him with his looks and ability with music.

Synergy-

The synergy created throughout the website is clear and easily seen. This is due to the opposite colour of the font and the background this is forms good synergy as each link or category is created using different colours. There is also synergy created by the use of dark        colours thorough out the website that is complemented with the use of more stereotypically classy colours such as gold and silver.

Tour dates/ Cross Media Promotions-

The Picture above shows the dates for the tours of 'Elvis in concert' this alone represents how large Elvis was and still is as after death he is still selling out arenas all around the world easily, the tour dates above are the only ones for the United Kingdom this shows that the everywhere is still wanting to hear Elvis in anyway they can live.

Who Promoted and Produced Elvis-

An extract from his biography, 'In 1954, Elvis began his singing career with the legendary Sun Records label in Memphis. In late 1955, his recording contract was sold to RCA Victor. By 1956, he was an international sensation. With a sound and style that uniquely combined his diverse musical influences and blurred and challenged the social and racial barriers of the time, he ushered in a whole new era of American music and popular culture.'

Elvis's promoter was a man called Jerry Weintraub who was born in 1937 and sadly died in 2015, he started work in the 1950's and worked all the way to his death, his most famous work was with Elvis and Sinatra. He first convinced elvis in 1970 to do a national tour and this helped to develop Weintraub's career and drive it forward for the rest of hid life.

Social Media Link-
Elvis is still active on most if not all social media platforms as the promotions till need to be presented somewhere that will get attention from the correct fans and people that are interested, the social media can also be used to sell or promote other merchandise which is still being sold.

Biography-  A small extract from his Biography  'Born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis Presley came from very humble beginnings and grew up to become one of the biggest names in rock 'n' roll. By the mid-1950s, he appeared on the radio, television and the silver screen. On August 16, 1977, at age 42, he died of heart failure, which was related to his drug addiction. Since his death, Presley has remained one of the world's most popular music icons.'
